"Aesthetic", from a Greek word meaning "perception," is a philosophy of the creative art, the value of the art, and a theory of the beautiful.
adj. an appreciation of beauty or good taste, artistic impact, and appearance.
n. the study of art or beauty.

In the philosophy of Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225 –1274) there are three main characteristics of beauty: wholeness, harmony, and clarity of the form.

"He who possessed the most profound of all contrapuntal arts understood how to make art subservient to beauty." (C. P. E. Bach writing about his father in 1788).
