Charlie Wickwire who grew up in Ipava and now lives in Florence, AL. just finished this model of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning flown by Ipava's WWII Ace, Captain Jack Alan Fisk (1918-1948). Jack enlisted in the Army Air Force in Peoria and received his wings with class 43-D at Williams Field, AZ. August 1943 brought Jack to Australia and then New Guinea. He was assigned to the 5th AF, 475th Fighter Group/433rd Fighter Squadron "Satan's Angels". In October 1944, Jack was in the Philippines. Jack flew 161 missions and completed his combat tour at Clark Field, Philippines on December 26, 1945. He was credited with seven confirmed victories. In January 1945 he returned to the states. Jack's decorations included a Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters and the Purple Heart. After the war he attended Mortuary School in Chicago and operated the Fisk Memorial Chapel in Ipava. Jack remained the in the Air Force Reserve. On Saturday, November 13, 1948, Jack was aboard a Beech C-45 transport that encountered a violent nocturnal thunderstorm over Attica, Indiana. The C-45 crashed at 2:29 A.M., there were no survivors.
