I was just informed in a telephone conversation with Cigna that, from today on, any compounded individual medication ordered by your doctor that costs over $400 needs a prior authorization by Cigna. This will change in two months when the coverage will go down to $200. In other words, any compounded medication which costs over $200 cannot be filled unless previously authorized by CIGNA. Any previous authorization needs to be requested directly by your doctor to Cigna. I quote "Compounded medcations are mixed by a licensed pharmacist at a compounding pharmacy. The compounding pharmacist combines, mixes or changes the ingredients of a drug to make a medication that may not be commercially available." I wanted to bring this to the attention of those interested because anyone may be confronted with this situation and not know why their compounded medication is not being supplied. If you need further information on this subject please contact Cigna at 1-800-244-6224.
