New York Birders

This is a group for New York birds, birders, and birding. Share your sightings, photos, videos, birding stories, blog posts, and news articles. Please keep content that you post relevant to the group.

Hopefully this group will help build the New York birding community - far too often we run into each other in the field and fail to introduce ourselves. Maybe if we see each others' faces on Facebook we will be more willing to stop and compare notes!

We welcome announcements about citizen science opportunities, such as Christmas Bird Counts, Winter Raptor Surveys, Breeding Bird Surveys, and announcements about upcoming birding/birder gatherings, talks, and programs in the New York State area. Please do not advertise, sell, or solicit for-profit items (calendars, photographs, jewelry, t-shirts, tours, etc.). If you have any questions about whether your trip or item meets these criteria, contact one of the admins.

Photos: At the request of several of the members of this group we would like to ask that people refrain from posting more than one picture every couple of days or so and to think before you post - is there a reason that people want to see your picture? Share what it is about your picture that made you want to share it. Not only will the over 1,000 members of the group appreciate it but images with such information often start better conversations and enrich the group. If you want to post more than one picture at a time you can create an album. Also, please make sure you are identifying the species you are posting and giving a location and date for the image.

Do not post exact locations of endangered or sensitive species, especially nesting species and roosting owls.

Bird Identification: We encourage you to make an effort to try and identify a bird on your own before asking for help. Indicate where and when you saw the bird when you post the photo, what you think it is and why. We also ask members to refrain from providing the ID immediately, and to instead point out identification features and other hints. This makes if a learning process for everybody.
