This town is situated on the southern bank of the Budhi Gandak a...nd is the administrative headquarters of both Muzaffarpur district and Tirhut Division. The town was founded sometime in 18th century by one Muzaffar Khan,a farmer of Chakka Nai Pargana who appropriated for the purpose 75 bighas from the four villages of Sikandarpur in the North, Kanhauli on the east, Saidpur on the south and Saraiyaganj on the west. The town has an area of about 6 square miles. Muzaffarpur is an important regional railway headquarters. It has a regional office controlling a vast area of the North Eastern Railway.
