ABOUT ODISHA

Odisha (Orissa) is situated in the east coaste of the Indian sub-continent. It is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal in the east, West Bengal in the north-east, Jharkhand in the north, Chhattisgarh in the west and Andhra Pradesh in the south.
Odisha is the ninth largest state by area in India, and the eleventh largest by population. Odia (Oriya) is the official and most widely spoken language.

Bhubaneswar - the capital city of Odisha is one of the most planned modern city and also a pilgrimage centre of Hindus and also known as 'Temple City'.
Odisha is the land of Lord Jagannath. Jagannath Dham is the abode of Lord Jagannath (Lord of the Universe) or Purushotham (Supreme Personality of the Universe). It is one of the CHAR DHAM (Four Holly Places) of the Indian sub-continent including temples at Puri, Rameshwaram, Dwaraka, and Badrinath. The Jagannath Temple is the mystery of 12th century A.D.

HISTORY

Odisha has a history spanning a period of over 3,000 years.


It is the modern name of the ancient nation of Kalinga, which was invaded by the Maurya Emperor Ashoka in 261 BC. The modern state of Orissa was established on 1 April 1936 as a province in British India, and consists, predominantly of Oriya speakers. 1 April is therefore celebrated as Utkal Divas (Odisha Day).

The name Orissa was adopted in 1950. In 1950, Orissa became a constituent state in the Union of India.

Now in 2011 the name has been changed to ODISHA ang oriya to odia.
