Norwich Sacred Harp

We are a bunch of people who sing the vibrant, spirited music from The Sacred Harp tunebook (1991 edition). It is free for anyone to join us, previous experience of singing or music reading isn't necessary (though it helps!), and there is no obligation (as we sing for our own enjoyment, and do not generally perform in public).

We meet every MONDAY evening, from 7.00 until around 9.00, at THE OCTAGON CHAPEL, Colegate, Norwich, NR3 1BN.
The Chapel carpark is intended for permit holders only - you can borrow a permit from us but we only have enough for 5 cars; otherwise there is a nearby pay carpark round the back, off Cross St/Calvert St on Golden Dog Lane.
If you can, bring along some nibbles to share and a small donation to help us cover the cost of hiring the gorgeous venue (suggested £2 or £3 each).
Check the group wall in case of any changes!

What does it sound like? It has been described as "a cross between bluegrass and Gregorian chant" and "a-capella heavy metal of the 19th century" - imagine a bunch of hillbillies and punks singing Renaissance church music, and that might give you some idea...
We look forward to singing with you!

Sometimes we sing from other shapenote tunebooks, usually the 7-shape Christian Harmony (2010 edition). Every 5th Monday we will sing just from the Christian Harmony; often we sing a few CH songs in our regular Sacred Harp evening singing too.

People overheard talking about us (take what you will from these!):

"They sound really great, I'd love to join in - though I feel like I might end up married to eight of them or something..."

"When they started singing, I felt like I was about to be sacrificed - but in a good way"
